Atlanta based Hothead Technologies is hoping that pro sports teams will use their advanced medical alert helmets to help prevent heat strokes. The innovative Intelligent Football Helmets will help prevent further deaths from heat stroke, which has to date seen 39 football players, mostly high-schoolers, perish from causes of heat stroke.
The innovative technology company is currently negotiating with helmet manufacturers and Professional football teams to introduce this important technology to professional sports.
The following is a quick breakdown of this very cool technology from the company’s website:
The HOT System is a patent-pending, two-component package that embeds a heat sensing unit inside the helmet of a football player and collects and relays periodic temperature readings from the player’s skin to a portable data collector (A ruggedized PDA or Laptop Computer). The portable device is used to alert a trainer or sideline assistant that a player has exceeded an allowable temperature while the player’s helmet is strapped on.
If a temperature ranges outside of the set parameters then the data collector will alert the sensor unit in the helmet to take temperature readings at a faster rate. The alert will be displayed on the data collector so the operator of the data collector can make a decision on whether to pull the player or not. The alert will be automatically removed from the data collector as soon as the temperature falls back into the normal parameters.
In essence, anytime a player’s temperature exceeds critical level, coaching staff are alerted immediately of player’s condition. This would help coaches and players with heat stroke avoidance by removing the player from the field for cooling off.
As you can see, the Intelligent Medical Alert Football HelmetsĀ are another tool that will alert sports professionals avoid heat stroke.
