One of the biggest fears facing seniors is their loss of independence. Being moved from ones own home into a nursery home can strike a serious blow to ones self-esteem and self-worth. Although Nursery homes have been developed to help the elderly, often it can feel like a prison where rules and daily routines can strip the elderly of their pride. One company has taken these issues into consideration when developing the WellAWARE Systems, a total home monitoring system that hopes to help independent seniors and their families live a more independent and stress free life.

According to the WellAware Systems Site:

Wireless Sensor Array– Depending on the care setting, up to six different types of unobtrusive sensors (motion, impact, bed, door, motion/temperature and motion/humidity) are strategically placed in the living space of a WellAWARE resident to detect behaviors with regards to daily activity, sleeping patterns, showering, and possible emergency events such as falls and leaving their stove on and unattended. The wireless sensors communicate the ongoing activity to the Data Manager. The diagram below shows the typical placement of sensors in a senior residence.

The WellAware Systems is another example in the ways that corporations are helping the elderly live a more independent life.

Pharmaceutical counterfeit has been steadily increasing, and people who are dependent on Pharmaceutical drugs are being short-changed both monetarily and medically. The need to create an alert tag that could be embedded within the drug itself has been a priority for quite some time. RFID chips, for example, are able to track products from the manufacturing stage to retail. The problem with RFID chips is that they exist inside the package and not in the pills themselves and this means that anyone can tamper with the package itself, removing the chip to deceive the buyer of the authentication and origin of the Pharmaceutical drugs.

TruTag’s technology etches ‘spectral barcodes’ into a porous silicon wafer, which can be consumed. The Edible TruTag MicroTag can be attached either to the surface of the pill or mixed in ‘mixed into items as a forensic excipient’. This ensures This means that the TruTag can be used to randomly sample medication during any stage of the product’s life-cycle, ensuring that any tampering can be detected, even when the pills are removed from the packaging.

According to the TruTag Website, these are some of the benefits to using TruTag Technology:

* More than one trillion codes available
* Inconspicuous size range (20 to 150 micrometers) allows covert or semi-covert use
* Edible and biologically inert
* High temperature resistance – melting point above 1600°C
* Passive – no energy input or output
* Can be used in or on a product, package, label, or security fiber
* Can be applied via sprays, coatings, inks, varnishes, or as part of laminate
* Can be integrated at a number of manufacturing stages
* High level of security possible using random tag shapes; security can be scaled to suit specific product needs
* Can be made self-authenticating and reduce the costs and security risks associated with online databases and maintenance

As you can see, medical alert technology can take on many different roles, and the TruTag Edible MicroTag is an indication on how company’s are investing in the security of pharmaceutical products.

Phone Alert is another method in which information can be sent out to hundreds, even thousands of participants immediately. The concept of the phone alert is to send interactive phone calls voice broadcasts. Handling of calls Phone Alert can be done using a webpage, and can manage notifications, reminders easily. Many organizations offering Phone Alert options, have incredibly robust websites that let you monitor calls, schedule calls, customize message on the fly as well as choosing which individuals get a message and which one’s don’t. This type of technology is obviously useful in numerous situations, such as managing entire workforces, political rallies, emergency situations and so on.

Phone Alert messages can either be recorded by you, or alternatively can use professional sound files which makes the message sound more professional. In situations where a call recipient requires operator assistance, a phone alert message can often be tailored to offer an operator number packaged with the alert. The operator assistance option can be used under a number of conditions, including job rotation.

Phone Alert is another way in which company’s have designed systems to help entire groups and individuals communicate important information that is vital to their job role.

The Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT) is a real life medical alert version of the Star Trek Tricorder. For those of you who have never watched Star Trek, the Tricorder is a small device used by medical physicians on the Star Trek series to diagnose a patients condition.

Although the Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT) will not diagnose diseases, it is currently undergoing tests to test its effectiveness on measuring a patient’s pulse, body temperature, respiration. The amazing aspect of this technology is that it can be done from a distance, up to twenty paces, which will effectively assist medical personnel in diagnosing numerous individuals within 30 seconds. This technology would be vital during a catastrophic disaster that involves numerous casualties.

According to the website currently promoting the Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT):

“Human nature is to pay attention to the person who is screaming and bleeding, but someone else with a less obvious internal injury may need to be the first priority,” said Price. “In the case of large-scale triage, it is not always the squeaky wheel that needs the grease. The SPTT may someday help first responders hear a lot more from their patients, and much more quickly.”

The Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT) is another example on how medical alert technology is quickly jumping ahead and making science fiction, science fact.

Microsoft is currently testing it’s Vine information and communication tool designed to assist people during natural or man made disasters. Designed to integrate communication devices into a tool used to help people stay in touch during times of crisis, Microsoft Vine hopes to be a the forefront of emergency assistance technology that everyone can use.

According Microsoft:

Use the dashboard to know what’s happening. Information associated with the places you have chosen will appear on your map, including articles from 20,000 news and public safety sources. Information from people you care about, such as alerts and reports, will appear on the dashboard too. Send and receive alerts. Organize people into groups – the sports team you coach, people who live nearby, family far away, special friends, and emergency contacts. Each person defines how they want to receive alerts – through e-mail, a text message, or on their computer. Reach them quickly using alerts. Post reports. You decide what you want to share with whom, and then the information is sent directly to their personal dashboard. Check in safe and well to let your family know you are okay, let trusted neighbors know you’re headed out of town, keep people informed of situations that matter, or share general information like the team practice schedule for the week.

Any tool that will help people stay in contact during emergencies is a worthy investment. Currently, Microsoft Vine is in Beta testing and is an invite only stage, meaning that you will need a personal invite from someone already involved in the Beta testing of Microsoft Vine or you can add your name to the waiting list at the www.vine.net

As company’s seek new ways to assist people with their medical alert issues to help them carry on with their lives, new technologies like the MedApps HealthPAL make a solid impression.

The MedApps HealthPAL is designed to connect to a number of medical devices, using smart cable or on-board bluetooth chip. Designed with simplicity in mind, the HealthPal user does not require special technology skills.

According to the MedApps website:

HealthPAL automatically collects data from compatible, off-the-shelf, medical monitors using a smart cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth. The data is then transmitted using embedded M2M (GSM) cellular chip (and soon CDMA) technology to be received by HealthCOM, MedApps’ full-featured, web-based portal for health care providers.

About the size of a cell-phone, the HealthPAL is ultra-portable for maximum mobility and its low cost enables remote monitoring to be available to large patient populations. It is considered to be the ultimate in simplicty. While it has buttons for special features and set-up, during daily operation the reading and data transmissions are COMPLETELY automated. The patient does not push any buttons, navigate any screen commands or touch the HealthPAL in any fashion.

HealthPAL is currently approved for use in conjunction with glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, weight scales, pulse oximeters and pedometers. As additional approvals are received, MedApps looks forward to expanding its capabilities to include the recording and transmitting of data from INR monitors, ECG, Peak Flow, CPAP, spirometers, O2 concentrators and more.

The HealthPAL has audio capability and can “speak” readings and alerts to the user. HealthPAL also has multi-lingual capability and can be programmmed to address patients in their own language.

Other features include:

• Built-in Timer
– Programmable Reminder to Assist in Compliance

• Rechargeable Power Source
– Long-life Lithium Polymer Battery

• Audio Speaker
– Gives Connected Devices Audio Capability

• Multi-Lingual Capability
– Pre-Program to speak in the User’s Language

• Audio Earphone Jack
– Allows User to Review / Listen to Audio Discreetly

HealthPAL Features

• DIMENSIONS
– Size: 109 mm x 54 mm x 23 mm
– Weight: Approx. 3 ounces

• Embedded Wireless Technology
– M2M Cellular, CDMA (pending), GSM, Bluetooth, GPS

• Adaptable Technology

With the advancement of technology, it’s surprising that some old tools can be just as affective in helping you in an emergency. Consider the tried and true safety Alert whistle for example. The Metal Alert Whistle w/ Lanyard is a great tool for people who need assistance, in many emergency related circumstances. For those of you who like to get into the great outdoors and rough it for a week or two, whether it be camping or hunting, consider taking a safety Alert whistle with you.

The safety Alert whistle is so simple yet so useful if you become separated from your group, partner, or family. It is incredibly effective and can help someone locate you quickly. Consider for example, if your children become separated from you while you are camping, they can instantly contact you via the safety Alert whistle, helping you locate them within minutes, something so simple, can save lives.

But safety Alert whistles are not just for the camping trips, they can be very useful in urban settings as well. The human ear has been conditioned to connect the sound of a whistle with a critical or important incident and may help you connect with people in case of an emergency. Since the sound of a whistle carries much further than our voices, you can reach out to people within a larger radius.

Consider a safety Alert whistle as part of your medical alert arsenal of tools, you never know when it may save your life.

Emergency medical alert technology has been saving lives for many many years. The elderly and disabled are particularly at risk from injuries, especially those who live alone, and having a medical alert device can be a life saver.

So how do medical alert devices work, and what makes them so valuable? The following is a short description of how Emergency medical alert technology works.

When the injured person presses the button on their medical alert bracelet, pendant etc, the microphone equipped transceiver, which is attached to the users land line. The transceiver handles the call by dialing out to the Customer Care Center and establishes an automatic 2 way communication between the user and the Call Center Rep.

Along with the phone call, the users profile is automatically put up on the CSR’s screen, which can include a number of items from Name, Age, Address, medical conditions etc. With the two way voice link created, the CSR will attempt to communicate with the user to gauge the severity of the situation. In situations where voice communication cannot be created between the user and the Customer service Rep., the customer service representative will either call contact number that is on the Subscribers profile, or medical emergency personnel. All of this happens within seconds, and can save the life of the medical alert subscriber.

As you can see, Emergency Medical Alert Technology is a fast reliable way of getting medical assistance to people in need, and it is vital for people who choose to live alone and have a medical condition that may require emergency attention.
