For those of you who have never watched Star Trek, the Tricorder is a small device used by medical physicians on the Star Trek series to diagnose a patients condition.

Although the Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT) will not diagnose diseases, it is currently undergoing tests to test its effectiveness on measuring a patient’s pulse, body temperature, respiration. The amazing aspect of this technology is that it can be done from a distance, up to twenty paces, which will effectively assist medical personnel in diagnosing numerous individuals within 30 seconds. This technology would be vital during a catastrophic disaster that involves numerous casualties.

According to the website currently promoting the Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT):

“Human nature is to pay attention to the person who is screaming and bleeding, but someone else with a less obvious internal injury may need to be the first priority,” said Price. “In the case of large-scale triage, it is not always the squeaky wheel that needs the grease. The SPTT may someday help first responders hear a lot more from their patients, and much more quickly.”

The Standoff Patient Triage Tool (SPTT) is another example on how medical alert technology is quickly jumping ahead and making science fiction, science fact.
