Pharmaceutical counterfeit has been steadily increasing, and people who are dependent on Pharmaceutical drugs are being short-changed both monetarily and medically. The need to create an alert tag that could be embedded within the drug itself has been a priority for quite some time. RFID chips, for example, are able to track products from the manufacturing stage to retail. The problem with RFID chips is that they exist inside the package and not in the pills themselves and this means that anyone can tamper with the package itself, removing the chip to deceive the buyer of the authentication and origin of the Pharmaceutical drugs.

TruTag’s technology etches ‘spectral barcodes’ into a porous silicon wafer, which can be consumed. The Edible TruTag MicroTag can be attached either to the surface of the pill or mixed in ‘mixed into items as a forensic excipient’. This ensures This means that the TruTag can be used to randomly sample medication during any stage of the product’s life-cycle, ensuring that any tampering can be detected, even when the pills are removed from the packaging.

According to the TruTag Website, these are some of the benefits to using TruTag Technology:

* More than one trillion codes available
* Inconspicuous size range (20 to 150 micrometers) allows covert or semi-covert use
* Edible and biologically inert
* High temperature resistance – melting point above 1600°C
* Passive – no energy input or output
* Can be used in or on a product, package, label, or security fiber
* Can be applied via sprays, coatings, inks, varnishes, or as part of laminate
* Can be integrated at a number of manufacturing stages
* High level of security possible using random tag shapes; security can be scaled to suit specific product needs
* Can be made self-authenticating and reduce the costs and security risks associated with online databases and maintenance

As you can see, medical alert technology can take on many different roles, and the TruTag Edible MicroTag is an indication on how company’s are investing in the security of pharmaceutical products.
